talk someone through a hand at the table.
A Step-by-Step Tutorial: One Full Hand of Texas Hold’em
Let’s walk through a complete hand of Texas Hold’em from start to finish, exactly as it happens at the table.
The Hand Begins: Blinds and the Deal
Before any cards are dealt, two players are required to place forced bets called the small blind and the big blind.
The player immediately to the left of the dealer places the small blind, and the next player places the big blind, which is usually double the small blind. These blinds ensure there is always something to play for.
Once the blinds are posted, every player is dealt two cards face down. These are your hole cards, and only you are allowed to see them.
Pre-Flop: The First Betting Round
After looking at your two cards, the first betting round begins. Action starts with the player seated to the left of the big blind.
At this point, each player must decide whether they want to continue in the hand.
You can fold, giving up your cards and exiting the hand.
You can call, matching the amount of the big blind.
Or you can raise, increasing the size of the bet.
The betting continues around the table until every remaining player has either matched the highest bet or folded. Once that happens, the hand moves forward.
The Flop: Three Community Cards
The dealer now places three cards face up in the centre of the table. This is called the flop. These cards are community cards, meaning all players can use them to build their hand.
Another betting round begins, starting with the first active player to the left of the dealer.
If no one has bet yet, players may:
If someone bets, the remaining players must:
Call the bet,
Raise it, or
Fold.
Again, the round ends when all remaining players have put in the same amount of chips.
The Turn: Fourth Community Card
Next, the dealer reveals a fourth community card, known as the turn.
This is followed by another betting round, played exactly like the one on the flop. Players now have more information, and bets often become larger at this stage.
The River: Final Community Card
The dealer then reveals the fifth and final community card, called the river.
This triggers the last betting round of the hand. Once betting is complete, no more chips can be added to the pot.
Showdown: Determining the Winner
If two or more players are still in the hand after the river betting, the game goes to showdown.
Players reveal their hole cards, and each makes the best possible five-card poker hand using any combination of their two cards and the five community cards.
The player with the highest-ranking hand wins the pot.
If, at any point during the hand, a player bets and all other players fold, that player wins immediately and does not have to show their cards.
One Final Concept to Remember
Texas Hold’em isn’t about playing every hand — it’s about decision-making at each stage.
Every betting round gives you a chance to continue, apply pressure, or step away.
Folded hands cost you little. Poor decisions cost you a lot.
