Texas Hold’em — The Basics

1. The Deal

  • Each player gets 2 private cards (called hole cards).

  • 5 community cards are dealt face-up on the table.

  • Everyone makes the best 5-card hand using any combination of their 2 cards + the 5 community cards.

2. The Betting Rounds

There are 4 betting rounds:

  1. Pre-Flop – After you get your 2 cards

  2. Flop – First 3 community cards are revealed

  3. Turn – 4th community card

  4. River – 5th and final community card

In each round, players can check, bet, call, raise, or fold.

3. Hand Rankings (Highest → Lowest)

  • Royal Flush

  • Straight Flush

  • Four of a Kind

  • Full House

  • Flush

  • Straight

  • Three of a Kind

  • Two Pair

  • One Pair

  • High Card

(If two players have the same hand, the highest card wins.)

4. Winning the Hand

You win by either:

  • Having the best hand at showdown, or

  • Getting everyone else to fold before the showdown

One Simple Tip (Especially for New Players)

Don’t play every hand. Good starting cards matter. Folding is not losing — it’s discipline.

If you want, I can:

  • Explain betting in plain English

  • Give a starter hand cheat-sheet

  • Or tailor this for responsible gaming / training content, like your blackjack work 🎯

Explain a complete round of play including big and small blind, flop, river and turn – fold, pass, check, bet and raise and showdown.

Perfect — here’s a clear, complete walk-through of one full Texas Hold’em hand, step by step, using plain language and no fluff.

A Complete Round of Texas Hold’em

1. The Blinds (Forced Bets)

Before any cards are dealt:

  • Small Blind – player to the left of the dealer posts a small forced bet

  • Big Blind – next player posts a larger forced bet

These create a pot to play for.

2. The Deal (Hole Cards)

  • Each player gets 2 cards face down

  • Only you can see your cards

3. Pre-Flop Betting

Betting starts with the player left of the Big Blind.

Players can:

  • Fold – throw your cards away, you’re out of the hand

  • Call – match the Big Blind

  • Raise – increase the bet

👉 Once all players have matched the highest bet or folded, the round ends.

4. The Flop

  • 3 community cards are dealt face up

  • Everyone can use them

Flop Betting

The first active player left of the dealer starts.

Players can:

  • Check – pass the action if no one has bet yet

  • Bet – put chips in the pot

  • Call – match a bet

  • Raise – increase the bet

  • Fold – exit the hand

5. The Turn

  • A 4th community card is dealt

Turn Betting

Same options as the flop:

  • Check / Bet / Call / Raise / Fold

6. The River

  • The 5th and final community card is dealt

River Betting

Final chance to bet:

  • Check / Bet / Call / Raise / Fold

7. Showdown

If two or more players remain:

  • Players reveal their cards

  • Best 5-card hand wins

  • The winner takes the pot

If someone bets and everyone else folds, there is no showdown — that player wins immediately.

Key Terms (Quick Clarity)

  • Fold – quit the hand

  • Check – pass without betting (only if no bet exists)

  • Call – match a bet

  • Bet – put chips in when no bet exists

  • Raise – increase an existing bet

  • Showdown – cards revealed to determine the winner

One Crucial Beginner Insight

Every betting round ends the same way:

  • All remaining players have put in the same amount, or

  • They’ve folded

talk someone through a hand at the table.

A Step-by-Step Tutorial: One Full Hand of Texas Hold’em

Let’s walk through a complete hand of Texas Hold’em from start to finish, exactly as it happens at the table.

The Hand Begins: Blinds and the Deal

Before any cards are dealt, two players are required to place forced bets called the small blind and the big blind.
The player immediately to the left of the dealer places the small blind, and the next player places the big blind, which is usually double the small blind. These blinds ensure there is always something to play for.

Once the blinds are posted, every player is dealt two cards face down. These are your hole cards, and only you are allowed to see them.

Pre-Flop: The First Betting Round

After looking at your two cards, the first betting round begins. Action starts with the player seated to the left of the big blind.

At this point, each player must decide whether they want to continue in the hand.

  • You can fold, giving up your cards and exiting the hand.

  • You can call, matching the amount of the big blind.

  • Or you can raise, increasing the size of the bet.

The betting continues around the table until every remaining player has either matched the highest bet or folded. Once that happens, the hand moves forward.

The Flop: Three Community Cards

The dealer now places three cards face up in the centre of the table. This is called the flop. These cards are community cards, meaning all players can use them to build their hand.

Another betting round begins, starting with the first active player to the left of the dealer.

If no one has bet yet, players may:

  • Check, which means passing the action without betting.

If someone bets, the remaining players must:

  • Call the bet,

  • Raise it, or

  • Fold.

Again, the round ends when all remaining players have put in the same amount of chips.

The Turn: Fourth Community Card

Next, the dealer reveals a fourth community card, known as the turn.

This is followed by another betting round, played exactly like the one on the flop. Players now have more information, and bets often become larger at this stage.

The River: Final Community Card

The dealer then reveals the fifth and final community card, called the river.

This triggers the last betting round of the hand. Once betting is complete, no more chips can be added to the pot.

Showdown: Determining the Winner

If two or more players are still in the hand after the river betting, the game goes to showdown.

Players reveal their hole cards, and each makes the best possible five-card poker hand using any combination of their two cards and the five community cards.

The player with the highest-ranking hand wins the pot.

If, at any point during the hand, a player bets and all other players fold, that player wins immediately and does not have to show their cards.

One Final Concept to Remember

Texas Hold’em isn’t about playing every hand — it’s about decision-making at each stage.
Every betting round gives you a chance to continue, apply pressure, or step away.

Folded hands cost you little. Poor decisions cost you a lot.
